Portland Harbour is potentially one of the UK's great gateways for international trade with its deep water and well-protected berths and anchorages. To realise this potential it needs to be supported by a good road distribution network, and it is hoped that the new Weymouth Relief Road (opened in March 2011) will aid economic success at Portland Harbour.

The Port has the capacity to handle all types of cargo from unit load/containers, general cargo (including groupage services) and bulk through to project cargos, heavy lifts and most categories of hazardous goods. The Port is currently licensed to handle explosives up to 5,600kgs/1.1 net explosive quantities at alongside berths and 500,000kgs/1.1 net explosive quantities at anchor.

In 2009 the New Quay area of the port saw the development of a 8,400m2 (approx. 2 acres) of cargo handling hard standing with an adjacent cargo shed. This facility is perfect for a Ro-Ro or General Cargo operations.

Cranes & Plant - The Port has a versatile fleet of mobile cranes and plant suitable for most types of application.
