Portland Port’s cruise season is looking to be a record breaking one with the greatest number of cruise passengers to date. Furthermore, 2017 will also see a record number of inaugural calls during an extended season, running from April to November. Overall the port is expecting to handle 24 cruise ships bringing over 36,000 passengers into Portland. Of these 24 calls, 10 will be first time visitors.

Following a lengthy planning process, the board at Portland Port have approved and finalised plans for the extension of the port’s primary cruise berth, with works scheduled to start in spring this year. Portland is one of just three ports on the south coast of the UK that can already handle vessels up to 300m LOA alongside. The new facility, which will be finished in time for the 2017 season will further strengthen the ports position by increasing this capability to berth vessels in excess of 340m LOA alongside.

This week Portland Port and Harbour Authority welcomed the arrival of the newest member of the harbour towage fleet, the Rufus Castle. Formally undertaking towage and offshore support services on the east coast of the UK, the tug was purchased by the harbour authority following the recent sale of the ports oldest operating tug, the Sandsfoot Castle. Its 40 hour journey from Hull to Portland went very well, even with the Gale force winds it encountered during its final 6 hour approach.

Portland Port is delighted to announce that global oil and shipping company Monjasa have started their bunker operations. The first bunker delivery was delivered by based bunker barge, MT Skaw Provider to general cargo vessel, MV Lagoon Phoenix, directly followed by a delivery to the Greek owned Bulk Carrier, MV Star Harmony. The conditions throughout operations were challenging with some of the worst winds seen this year, however the port working alongside Portland Bunkers UK and Monjasa, successfully managed to undertake both operations safely and efficiently, so that minimal delays were incurred.
