Heritage

Portland Port and Harbour showcase rich historical maritime heritage, including listed structures like John Coode’s breakwaters and remnants of naval operations, while sitting adjacent to the globally significant Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.

Evidence of the historical port and naval operations are present throughout Portland Port and Portland Harbour.

In particular, a number of listed structures sit on the port estate, including the defensive East Weare batteries, the remains of a rifle range, the engineer’s office from which the engineer John Coode oversaw the construction of his grand breakwaters, and the breakwaters themselves including the remains of the innovative but ultimately unsuccessful hydraulic powered coaling system, the first coaling point for the nascent steam navy.

The port itself is not within but is boarded to the south by the UNESCO Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, the UK’s only natural World Heritage Site. The site is designated for its outstanding combination of globally significant geological and geomorphological features.
