Waste management

All waste management activities at the facility are conducted in strict compliance with the required licenses issued by the appropriate regulatory authorities, including the Environment Agency. On the berth, we provide a comprehensive selection of waste disposal options, including open and covered dry skips, RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) containers and wheelie bins to meet various waste management needs.

As part of our service, the first open general waste skip is included in the berthing dues, ensuring convenience and cost-effectiveness for our customers. For specialised waste disposal needs, we can accommodate a range of materials through prior arrangement. Examples of these materials may include hazardous waste, recyclables or large industrial waste.

For further details on our waste management services, or to make a special arrangement, please contact our Landside team in advance.

Compliance and Regulation

The Portland Waste Management Plan is a guide for visiting vessels, detailing the procedures and facilities available within Portland Harbour for managing ship-generated waste. The plan ensures that all vessels using the harbour can dispose of waste efficiently and in an environmentally responsible manner.

The plan adheres to international and national legislation, including:

  • Merchant Shipping (Port Waste Reception Facilities) Regulations 2003 (Amended 2009): These UK-specific regulations require ports to provide adequate facilities for receiving ship-generated waste, ensuring compliance without causing undue delays to vessels.
  • MARPOL 73/78 (International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships): This international framework regulates the prevention of pollution by oil, harmful substances, sewage, garbage and air pollution from ships.
