Full Time Vacancy for Marine Officer (Tug Master)
Portland Harbour Authority are looking to recruit a motivated and hardworking individual for the above position. All vessels are based at Portland Port and operate solely within the Portland Harbour Authority pilotage area. Working as part of a team to provide 24/7 cover for harbour towage operations, on a rota basis, outside of normal day working activities.
This position may be of particular interest to seagoing personnel looking for a shore-based position as full training, including ASD tug simulator training will be given.
The successful applicant will be required to undertake the following main duties:
- To act as Master on any of the Company’s 3 ASD Tugs
- Act as Coxswain / Skipper on any of the company’s other marine craft as may be required from time to time.
- Undertake routine, planned and breakdown maintenance on all vessels as required
- In the event of an emergency, carry out work and duties in connection with the Emergency Plan and / or the Oil Spill Contingency Plan as directed by the Duty Harbour Master
Applicants should possess the following basic minimum qualifications:
- STCW Master 500T or higher
- Boat Masters Certificate
- Valid ENG 1 Certificate
Desirable Skills:
- Commercial maritime background and / or previous port experience
- Excellent communication skills
- Towing and Pushing Endorsement
- Excellent boat handling skills
- Harbour ASD experience preferable but not essential as full training will be given.
- Good knowledge of electronic navigational / chart systems
- Ability to work on own initiative and take control of situations effectively, efficiently and calmly
- Good computer skills with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office

Full Time Vacancy for Planning & Consents Manager
Portland Harbour Authority Limited is looking to recruit a Planning and Consents Manager. Reporting to the General Manager (Commercial) the primary function of the post will be the obtaining of any required planning permissions, consents and environmental permissions associated with the development of Portland Port and Portland Harbour.
Particular consideration will be given to applicants who have experience in the ports or maritime sector. Experience in managing the planning permission and environmental consents process on small, medium and large infrastructure projects would be desirable. Candidates should ideally be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of England’s planning, marine licensing and environmental permitting systems. Experience in undertaking environmental surveys and investigations and preparing and coordinating environmental reports, impact assessments and statements would also be beneficial.
Educated to Bachelor degree level, preferably in an environmental or planning based subject, candidates will possess good computer skills, with experience in the use of Microsoft Office packages. Flexible and a team player, with the ability to work and plan independently, the successful candidate will also have excellent communications skills, be professional in manner and smart in appearance and will be willing to undertake out of hours working as and when required. Primarily office based the successful applicant will need to be able to undertake occasional travel both nationally and internationally in line with their responsibilities.
Salary: c. £40,000 subject to experience.

Marine Department
CASUAL EMPLOYMENT - MARINE DEPARTMENT – DECK CREW
Portland Harbour Authority operates several vessels, including Pilot Boats, Tugs, workboats and a harbour patrol RIB. Applications are invited from suitable personnel from a marine related background to join the Harbour Authority’s casual roster for work within the Marine Department.
Ideally the applicant should be in possession of a first aid Certificate, however all applications will be considered with regard to deck crew on the Port’s vessels.

Police & Security Department
Applications are invited from suitable people to join the Harbour Authority’s casual roster for work within the Security Department.
The Port has a fast-growing cruise operation and always requires extra security staff to assist, especially during the cruise season, usually between April and October. The ship visits can fall on a weekday or a weekend, with the length of the call varying in duration on the day. Other duties can include manning cruise reception desk and ship gangway security, which would be specifically suited to applicants who favour night working.
The role can be physically demanding, and applicants will have a degree of flexibility with regards to availability and working times.
Ideally the applicant should be in possession of a SIA Level 2 Qualification, however applicants with any relevant experience will be considered and training will also be given. A full UK driving licence is required for this role.
